The main aim of the photographic documentary ‘’I was born in Xangai” is to build a social portrait of the population currently inhabiting the Aldoar Social Housing Estate (Oporto), which was transferred in 1968 from the Xangai and Liberdade shanty towns, situated in the outskirts of the city, near Castelo do Queijo beach and Matosinhos. Comprising 16 multi-family housing blocks, the approximately 1200 people that currently live in this estate inhabiting 396 homes have to deal daily with numerous shortcomings.

Filomena Nascimento attended the Universidade de Artes e Arquitectura Lusíada do Porto, were she obtained a degree in Architecture in 2005. She works in Italy, Spain and Portugal, and since 2010 works as an independent researcher and practitioner. Nascimento started practicing photography in 2005 as a form of registration, documentation, sketching, and artistic expression.
